I want to help 100 Miami based entrepreneurs owners in 2019
Taking control of your business is important if you want to see success. As a business advisor, I consult with successful businesses and entrepreneurs who have that twinkle in their eyes about a particular idea. The latter are my favorite types of people to interact with while advising.
Miami still has a long way to go
2018 had some major news for the Miami business ecosystem. Amazon was on the hunt for their 2nd headquarters outside of Seattle, Washington. Personally, I have never made it to Seattle but I know they don’t have the beaches as we do and I will pass for now. Furthermore, who would want to leave the sun and fun for rainy gloomy days but the hopes of running into Jeff Bezo’s? I’d rather run into Puff Daddy at LIV nightclub but I digress. Miami lost the battle to the DMV and NYC areas respectively; unsurprisingly because both markets have a lot to offer. Miami has a long way to go if they want to be taken seriously in the big jobs market.
How I am helping the Miami ecosystem
As mentioned before; I was hired by Magnitax.com to be a business advisor and accountant. It took me a while to step away from my startup pursuits to do something most people shy away from doing. Accounting isn’t as sexy as being a web developer, in contrast, we are still in high demand and it really does not take a 3-month course to be taken seriously. At this moment, our business owners need to build financially sound and legacy businesses. This would help with creating some of the infrastructures large corporations need to employ staff members. Think about it; if high-skilled workers come to a city; shouldn’t there be successful businesses waiting to provide a high level of services. The best way to do that is if businesses are started with a sound foundation built in healthy financials, marketing plan and overall healthy business climate.
There is no silver bullet to Miami’s brain drain
In 2014 I left Miami for a role with an investment firm in Jacksonville, Florida. If you asked me then why I took the job it would be based on the lack of serious roles in Miami. I’m unaware of everyone’s job and how much they make. However, I can say with certainty that Miami has a shadow economy. It probably would take a Ph.D. in economics for me to give solid proof but for right now, I will explain in three sentences. Miami has a tendency to hire senior-level employees from other cities or countries. Most of the employees here support the following employers; Miami-Dade College, Miami-Dade Public School System, and Miami-Dade County government. Everyone else works for a large corporation with offices here or a company with less than 20 employees. If you are lucky, a good job will be available but most people do not wait that long before leaving. Something has to change quickly, I pray to be part of the solution.
